LIVINGSTON, Ala. (WBRC) - A new partnership is set to bring more support and activities to the University of West Alabama (UWA) and the surrounding community in Livingston.

UWA announced a new partnership with the Tuscaloosa branch of the YMCA that will still focus on fitness, but go further than just lifting weights or running on a treadmill.
Not only is the Student Union Building on the Livingston campus going through an expansion and renovation, the university will expand on-campus student health offerings with help from the YMCA.

President Todd G. Fritch said the partnership reflects UWA’s commitment to support the overall well being of students and the surrounding communities.
“By collaborating with the Y, we are expanding opportunities and resources that promote healthy lifestyles, increased engagement, and community connection,” Fritch said.

Leaders at the Y say they will also bring a number of programs happening in Tuscaloosa to UWA’s facilities, which are open to the public, including youth sports, summer camps and after-school programs.

Jeff Knox, the CEO of YMCA Tuscaloosa, told WBRC that the partnership just makes sense.
“They have capital assets. We have programming expertise. So it’s just a great partnership,” Knox said. “It’s like, ‘Hey, we need things for our children and our families to do.’ That’s the space that we live in. So, it’s like, ‘Here’s a gap, let’s fill it.’”
The YMCA of Tuscaloosa is currently teaching group exercise and personal training at the UWA fitness center. It will start hosting after-school programs for kids in the Livingston community this Fall.
