BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham is offering a double dose of undersea adventure this summer, with “The Little Mermaid” on stage at Red Mountain Theater and an ocean experience at the McWane Science Center aquarium!
Kayley Cook, director of museum engagement at McWane Science Center, welcomed Keenan Barrett, who plays Flounder in Red Mountain Theater’s production, to explore the center’s collection of marine life and artifacts.

Cook walked Barrett through real-world versions of objects featured in the story, including shells examined up close with a magnifying glass.
McWane offers programming highlighting different treasures found in Earth’s oceans, along with daily feedings of eels, sharks and rays. So after you see the musical, you can continue the story by seeing the undersea creatures that inspired the beloved story.

Barrett said the proximity of the two venues adds to the experience for Birmingham audiences.

“I feel very privileged because everything is packed into my home, Birmingham. It’s just very nice to have only a four-minute drive from McWane to Red Mountain,” Barrett said.
Cook said the partnership reflects a broader goal around ocean education.

“I think building empathy is a really significant part of STEM education, especially when we’re talking about our ocean health and ocean conservation. Building empathy for the animals that are in those waterways right now and what steps can we take to improve their lives and ultimately our own,” Cook said.
“The Little Mermaid” runs at Red Mountain Theater from July 12 to July 19. Tickets can be purchased by clicking or tapping here. McWane Science Center is holding summer hours through Aug. 9.
