PELHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - For many people living with chronic back and nerve pain, the search for relief can feel like a dead end. One Alabama patient says that’s exactly why the arrival of a new machine at Chiro Wellness Clinic in Pelham is a big deal, because right now, it’s the only one of its kind in the state.
The clinic recently added the Accu-Spina, an AI-assisted spinal decompression system designed to tailor treatment to each patient, and adjust that treatment as the patient improves.

How it works
The Accu-Spina is used for decompression along key regions of the spine, including the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), and lumbar (lower back) areas, as well as issues extending toward the sacrum, according to the clinic.
Clinic staff says patients are secured with comfortable harnesses on the table, then the machine guides a treatment session that typically lasts about 25 minutes.
“Our patients love it because they get a 25-minute nap while they’re getting healthy,” therapist Cecilia Bostany said.

AI customization aimed at better outcomes
Unlike traditional decompression systems, the Accu-Spina uses AI technology to customize treatment not only to the individual, but to changes over time.
“It can also customize each person’s treatment because along the course of their treatment, it’s changing for them as they improve,” Bostany said.
The machine also uses what the clinic describes as micro-stretching with carefully controlled tension, plus a feature called oscillation, intended to support disc health as the disc space opens.

Who it may help
Aaron Mahieu, who is a patient and also a big believer in the machine, said he previously sought treatment out of state after finding limited local options, especially when dealing with issues like herniated discs, sciatic pain and neuropathy.
“I think a lot of people are hitting a dead end when it comes to getting relief… and so this machine… is just an absolute game changer,” Mahieu said.

Clinic representatives also say the machine may appeal to athletes, not only for pain relief but also for injury prevention by supporting a healthier back.
What treatment looks like
Treatment plans vary, but the interview suggests many patients may complete around 20 sessions, with tension increasing gradually over time.
“We want to do it gradually,” Bostany said. “Each treatment that you have, the tension is increased to make it the best possible outcome for each person.”
For people who have lived with daily pain and feel like they’ve run out of options, one speaker hopes this technology offers something many have stopped expecting: hope.
“So many people suffer with the constant pain that they’re in, and they just don’t think there’s any hope,” the speaker said. “And then you come in here, and you’re finding help.”
