BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A new locally owned fabric shop is stitching together community in Birmingham.
Magic City Fabric, located in East Avondale, opened in January and is the latest creative stop for anyone interested in quilting, garment sewing or learning the basics.
The shop is owned by Bea Cross, a woman of color, entrepreneur, mother and self-described maker who is building what she calls an intentionally inclusive space.
Magic City Fabric offers a curated selection of quilting cottons, apparel fabrics and sewing essentials like tools and notions. But the store is designed to be more than a place to shop.
Along with fabrics and supplies, customers can find hands-on classes, including Sewing 101 and beginner quilting, plus opportunities to learn how to make clothing.

The space also offers machine rentals, large-format pattern printing and rentals to support projects in progress.
Cross says she’s happy to help customers choose the right fabric — and she has strong opinions on what works best.
“Natural fibers are the best. Cotton, linen and wool. I think everyone should wear natural fibers,” Cross said. “It keeps you cool in the summer, and it cleans easier, and you can get the smells out better.”
At its core, the shop’s goal is to make sewing more approachable.
“Whether you’re sewing your first quilt or designing your next wardrobe,” the shop notes, “you’ll find inspiration, support, and a welcoming space here.”
