Sony announces price hike for PlayStation consoles, blames pressures on economic landscape

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Less than a year after both Microsoft and Sony raised prices on their flagship consoles, Sony is once again hitting gamers right in the wallets.

Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment Isabelle Tomatis announced over the weekend that the prices of the PS6, PS5 Pro and the PlayStation Portal will all see another price hike.

The standard PS5 with a disc drive and the PS6 Digital Edition are both seeing a $100 price increase while the price of the PS5 Pro is going up a staggering $150.

The PlayStation Portal is also going up in price by $50.

Tomatis said the increases are due to the “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

“We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” Tomatis said.

The new prices go into effect April 2.

The PlayStation 5 launched in Nov. 2020 with a US price tag of $499. meaning the same console today will $150 more beginning next week.

The cost of the PS5 Pro will set players back $900, making it the most expensive console ever produced by Sony.

In May 2025, Microsoft announced a price increase to it’s hardware lineup, similarly citing “market conditions and development costs.”

In Feb. of this year, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa would not rule out a price increase to the newly released Switch 2 console as the costs of computer memory has continued to skyrocket.
