BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Cierra Lober wanted to create a community space where anyone could gather for an event, meeting, or jam session — and she decided to build it around one of the oldest traditions in the world: tea. That is how Cha House was born.

Cha House is located in Avondale at 131 41st Street South, next to Avondale Brewing. The space features comfy chairs, couches, and pillows for guests to lounge and sip teas sourced from around the world.

The menu covers every major category of tea, including white, yellow, green, oolong, black, hei cha and an herbal selection. Prices range from $3 to $30. Most teas are sold by the pot and can be shared, with cup options also available. All teas can be served hot or iced.

Lober, who has studied tea for years, said the varieties all share a common origin.

“They all come from one plant, the Camellia sinensis,” she said. “The only difference from the white, green, and black is how they are processed.”

The community aspect of Cha House extends well beyond tea. On any given day, a dance group or candle-making crew may come in for tea. The next day, guests might find people doing yoga in the corner.

Lober said the vision came from her experience with tea culture in Northern California, which she has now brought to Birmingham.
