Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen coming to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - For the first time in over 20 years, two classic Pokémon titles will be available for players old and new alike.

Just in time for Pokémon Day 2026, Nintendo is rereleasing Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles.

FireRed and LeafGreen were originally released in 2004 as Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue released in 1996.

“New and returning players can celebrate 30 years of Pokémon by exploring the Kanto region and reuniting with some of their favorite Pokémon and characters in their original settings,” Nintendo said in a press release. “Longtime fans will enjoy taking a trip back to where it all began, while newcomers can experience firsthand some of the earliest appearances of iconic characters and settings.”

The games will feature all the updates introduced during the Game Boy Advance era, including abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items and the ability to select your character’s gender.

Players on the Switch and Switch 2 will be able to link up with friends via local co-op, no Game Link Cable needed.

Both games will be available in English, French and Spanish on the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop beginning Feb. 27. They’ll also be available at select retailers launch week for $19.99.
