Nintendo president doesn’t rule out Switch 2 price hike

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The President of Nintendo would not rule out a price hike to the Switch 2 hardware as component prices continue to rise.

During the company’s latest earnings call, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the recent rise of memory prices did not significantly impact hardware profitability in the third quarter nor do they expect it in the fourth.

“However, if this rise in component prices lasts longer than expected and runs through the next fiscal year and beyond, it may put pressure on profitability,” Furukawa said, adding that no decision has been made. “If the situation deteriorates significantly, we will carefully assess market trends and respond.”

The Nintendo Switch released on June 5 with a price tag of $449.99, more than double the cost of its predecessor. Despite the price increase, the console broke records in the days after its release.

The price of computer memory has skyrocketed in recent months, surging 90% in Q1 alone, according to Counterpoint Memory Price Tracker.

The higher demand and consequent shortage of memory chips has been attributed to the seemingly overnight rise are artificial intelligence as AI companies buy up the highly valued chips.

The rising cost of memory has led to some reports that Sony will push the release of the highly anticipated PlayStation 6 to 2028 or 2029.
