BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month. WBRC 6 News is On Your Side with a list of suicide prevention resources.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – Raising awareness, spreading hope, and sparking meaningful action around suicide prevention, NAMI offers a downloadable toolkit, crisis resources, and more to start a conversation and make a difference.

American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, Alabama Chapter (AFSP) – Based in Birmingham, the AFSP Alabama Chapter focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by educating the public, raising funds, and reaching out to those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

Alabama Suicide Prevention and Resources Coalition – Now a fully-fledged non-profit organization, Alabama Suicide Prevention and Resources Coalition started as a taskforce of the Alabama Department of Public Health to prevent suicide. Now, the organization focuses on educating the people of Alabama in suicide prevention techniques.

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs – In a recent study, nearly 18% of those who died by suicide in Alabama were Veterans. Governor Kay Ivey and other Alabama Legislature and representatives formed this campaign to raise awareness and help veterans in need. Additional veteran resources can be found here.

Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) – ADPH formed a bureau of prevention, promotion, and support for suicide prevention. With information on statistics, the why behind the hopeless feeling, and emergency mental health support, ADPH is raising awareness and spreading hope through Alabama.

VitAL – A safe space for kids, teens, young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults, VitAL provides suicide prevention in Alabama for any age group. By reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, VitAL aims to prevent the risk of suicide.

Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) – Offering a wide range of resources like crisis centers, school-based mental health services, community mental health centers, and a 988 lifeline. The 988 Lifeline is a 24-hour service that can be called or texted anytime you feel at risk of suicide.

Alabama State Department of Education – Suicide prevention resources and personal training can be found at Alabama State Department of Education. Learn skills on prevention and how to help others, or test your knowledge on suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention.
