BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Pet Amber Alert reports that an increase of 30-60% pets get lost between July 4th and 6th. On July 5th, most animal shelters report the busiest day of the year.

WBRC 6 News is On Your Side with a few tips to keep your four-legged family members safe during the upcoming holiday celebrations.

PREP TO PROTECT: Consider microchipping your pet or registering them through your local animal control office before the celebrations begin. Up to 60% of lost pets are euthanized due to a lack of proper identification causing it impossible to reunite them to their owners.

STAY INDOORS: If avoiding being outdoors is an option, keep pets inside the home during holiday celebrations. When walking pets, make sure they are leashed.

COMFORT THEM: Make sure your pets feel comfortable and safe. Whether they need extra pets, a sooth talking to, or a special treat, attempt to stay near your pets during holiday celebrations. While away, assure pets have access to crates, rooms or spaces where they feel the safest. In extreme situations, contact your veterinarian for recommendations on how to calm your pet’s anxiety.

FLOOD OUT THE NOISE: Attempt to drown out the sounds of fireworks by closing windows and cranking up the volume on the TV or playing louder than normal music.

STAY ON SCHEDULE: Pets are very in tune with their families’ actions. Sticking to your normal routine as much as possible will be a comfort for your pet during the chaos.
