BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - We are giving you a glimpse into how the magic happens through a backstage tour of Red Mountain Theatre’s production of Disney’s Frozen!
Director Roy Lightner invites you to come see the show.
One of the biggest revelations Lightner shared is how little they started with to put on the production.
Lightner says he was excited after getting permission to put on the musical from Disney.
“So, we got so excited that we were given the rights to do this show, and what that means is they basically just send us paper, which is like just the lyrics and the dialogue, and then the score with the music in it. Everything else has to come out of our minds. We get nothing else to help create this story, and that’s when we really go to work. We’ve been at work at this for about 18 months in order to put this whole thing together,” said Lightner.

When you see the sets change - created by and through the imaginations of Birmingham artists - it just adds another layer of pageantry to what a beautiful production it is already.
Of course, the music is the big reason why you come to see Frozen and to hear it live. Red Mountain Theatre allows us to give you a listen to Elsa’s big song “Let It Go”. You can hear why Lightner says they are so happy to have Sarah Fernandez playing that role:
He also let us in on surprise - a song you probably haven’t heard.
“What’s really cool in the musical that was on Broadway is they realize that there wasn’t a song for Anna and Elsa to sing together. So, they wrote a song called ”I Can’t Lose You". That happens in Act 2 between the two of them. That wasn’t in the Broadway production, but is in our production and was on the national tour,” Lightner said.
Also, he says the special effects are like nothing you’ve ever seen on a live stage because of new technology. You really have to experience it.

Lightner wants to show off the talents of everyone involved in Red Mountain Theatre’s production of Disney’s Frozen.
He says, “We put in a bunch of surprises in our version just to sort of make the movie come to life, but also make you sort of sit in awe and wonder, ‘How do they do that? How did that happen?’ And there’s a lot of magic involved, and to create that excitement and the joy amongst people we worked really, really hard.”
The production of Disney’s Frozen will run at the Red Mountain Theatre through June 29.
