BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The cast of Frozen: The Broadway Musical at Red Mountain Theatre is gearing up for the opening night of the show on Friday, May 30.

The show will run from May 30 to June 29, with opportunities to see the show all month. However, getting the show ready for opening was done in less time than that.

Anne Kelly, a current student at the University of Alabama, is a member of the ensemble, and the understudy for Queen Iduna, for Frozen: The Musical at Red Mountain Theatre. She revealed a bit of the behind-the-scenes process.

“An average rehearsal day was always a bit different considering that we learned the music, staged and choreographed the show in two weeks,” said Kelly.

Kelly said the cast rehearses for around four hours during the week, with longer rehearsals as show opening draws closer.

“We start every day by circling up with our director, Roy Lightner, and we do a check in on ourselves to see how we are feeling that day. It’s very refreshing to have that moment to ground ourselves as a cast and prepare ourselves mentally for the work that we need to do that night,” said Kelly. “Then, Natalie Wisdom, our choreographer, gets straight into staging and dancing, and we work through the numbers that are planned to be set that day.”

Kelly said her favorite part of watching the show come together behind-the-scenes is the first music rehearsals.

“I think that it’s so magical hearing your full cast sing together, especially with ‘Frozen’s’ score that is so beautiful. It makes my heart so happy to hear what sound we make as a cast and how this sound further develops into something amazing by showtime,” said Kelly.

Kelly has grown up participating in Red Mountain Theatre’s youth ensemble and since graduating high school, she’s been heavily involved in the summer productions. So, she’s seen and has been a part of the process of putting on many shows. However, she says “Frozen” stands out and is “definitely the most ambitious show” that has been done in her time.

“All aspects of this Disney show are grand. From the music to the projections that are being heavily used to create the magic of Elsa’s powers,” said Kelly. “I’m most excited for people to see technical design on this show more than anything. From the set design to the projections galore, this show is absolutely stunning to watch and I can’t wait to hear what people’s reactions will be to that aspect of the show.”

Kelly urges everyone who can attend the show to do so.

“It’s truly Disney magic with a heartfelt story, and it’s a production that people of Birmingham don’t want to miss! I also think that Frozen connects this grandeur to a beautiful story with the theme that love truly does conquer all,” said Kelly.
