BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Warner Bros. latest outing in theaters nearly doubled its expected opening weekend earnings.

“A Minecraft Movie,” starring Jack Black and Jason Mamoa, raked in an astonishing $157 million in the U.S. and Canada during its first few days in theaters, according to the Associated Press. It’s looking at an additional $144 million internationally.

It was projected that the movie might hit $80 million.

The movie, based on 2011’s Minecraft video game, set the record for the biggest opening weekend of a video game adaptation, outdoing the $146 million earned by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in 2023.

“A Minecraft Movie,” directed by Jared Hess, currently has a 47% positive review rating by critics on RottenTomatoes.com while audiences are scoring the film much higher at 86%.
