What I learned wearing houndstooth as a newbie in Alabama

When living in Alabama, I’ve realized you must pick a side

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - If you’re planning to move to central Alabama, a word of advice to the newbie: don’t wear a houndstooth pattern! Or do…the choice is yours. Either way, be advised the fashion print will make a bold statement to the entire state…whether you intend to or not, and not necessarily because you’re a fashionista!

Bama fans will pat you on the back, Auburn founds will scowl, and that’s just the way it is. Or at least that’s the way it’s always been ever since Paul “Bear” Bryant popularized the pattern in the late 1960s.

It’s consistently remained a favorite for Alabama football fans and everyone beside Alabama transplants (like me) seems to know it. This is one of the first things I learned after moving to Alabama and wearing houndstooth print dress at work. I mean…it was cute but I had no idea what lesson I was about to learn.

On the other hand, if you’re not quite ready to pick a side but you love a good print, here are three popular patterns just in time for fall that I think will keep you Switzerland-neutral and still make a bold statement.

Animal Print

Bring out your inner lion, tiger, or cheetah- oh my! (bears don’t have prints.) with a bold animal pattern.

Stripes

Nothing says classy like a tailored pinstripe suit or classic-like a pin striped skirt.

Tartan Print or Plaid

Can’t seem to get over houndstooth? Opt for Tartan print or plaid instead. In fact, Bear Bryant himself was often pictured wearing a Gingham print hat that lives in the same family as these two timeless prints.

Bonus

As a bonus, never forget that floral works in any season. The right earth tones on a floral print blouse or wide-leg pants can never be outs of season.
