BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The 17th Annual Be a Senior to a Santa program is now underway. The tradition, hosted by Home Instead, collects donations to give to isolated and lonely seniors as gifts during the holiday season.
Dan Pahos is the franchise owner for Home Instead. He said the demand this year is greater.
“I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but we have to get the word out because the demand is always greater than the supply,” said Pahos.
Home Instead has partnered with Meals on Wheels and the UAB heart clinic to collect everyday items and deliver them to seniors before Christmas. Donations can be anything from toothpaste, to blankets, to batteries.
“Toothpaste, toothbrushes, blankets, are big, obviously, as we head into the cold weather. Slippers, batteries, lotions, shampoo, soap.”
Pahos said many of these seniors will not have any company this holiday season and many of them appreciate the thought.
“The fact that someone’s knocking on their door, not only with gifts, but brining some holiday cheer, that is what we found. The emotional aspect of it is what is greatly appreciated.”
Home Instead needs your help with donations. Items are being accepted now through Dec. 8. Donations can be dropped off or ordered through the Amazon Wishlist, which can be found here.
